Rourkela: A new system to haul wagons was inaugurated by Rourkela Steel Plant's (RSP) Executive Director (Works) Gautam Banerjee. The new wagon haulage system has the capability of pulling six wagons each carrying 140 T of slabs, an official release said.  The system was inaugurated at Continuous Casting Machine – 1 slab yard of steel melting shop-1 of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) by Executive Director (Works) Gautam Banerjee.

On the occasion, General Manager (Incharge Services) CR Mohapatra, General Manager (SMS-I), and other senior officers, employees were present. This system has been set up at a cost of Rs 43.50 lakhs. Banerjee also inaugurated a new 'Variable Frequency Drive' (VFD) system at steel melting shop-II of RSP recently.

"The new system has the capability of pulling six wagons each carrying 140 T of slabs. Earlier the wagons used to be pulled using the tongs of EOT cranes in the slab yard. This was resulting in damage to the tongs, the main hoist ropes and the wheels. Safety was also another issue. The new system will eliminate the use of EOT cranes for pulling wagons and hence the availability of EOT cranes for slab loading/unloading in the slab yard will increase. This will help in accruing a saving of about Rs 22.30 lakhs per year. The safety of equipment and ground staff will also be enhanced by using the new system," the release said.
