On February 2, HPCL rolled out the initiative on a pilot basis across 15 petrol pumps in the National Capital Region

New Delhi: In order to assure consumers that they are getting what they pay for, state-owned oil retailer, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL), has a novel offer — self-fuelling stations, where you can punch in the numbers and use the hose to refill your vehicle's tank. On February 2, HPCL rolled out the initiative on a pilot basis across 15 petrol pumps in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Commenting on the move, Vishal Bajpai, HPCL Delhi Co-ordinator, said that it is aimed at cultivating customer trust. "When people go to refuel their vehicles at petrol pumps, the quality and quantity of the fuel is one of the major concerns for them. They ask themselves… am I getting the right quantity of petrol, is it good quality? In keeping with HPCL's tagline, HP hai jahan, bharosa hai wahan (Where there is HP, there is trust), this initiative is a way of assuring our customers that HP is delivering 100 percent quantity and quality to them," Bajpai said.

What are self-fuelling stations?

Under the initiative, a separate station has been carved out at select HP petrol pumps in Delhi where customers can go and punch in the numbers themselves and use the hose to refuel into their vehicle tanks. For now, these kiosks have an attendant who assists customers in the procedure and in checking the quality and quantity of the fuel they are buying. However, Bajpai said that if the plan is received well by HP's customer-base, they will roll it across outlets and turn these kiosks into unmanned stations.
