New Delhi: The Government is developing strategies to repower around 25 GW of ageing wind energy projects with modern technology to improve their efficiency, Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Thursday.

Addressing the eighth Windergy India 2026 conference, organised by the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), Joshi said these projects were installed decades ago and were approaching the end of their operational life.
"These projects are nearing the end of their life. Parts are getting old, so we are working to re-power them," he said.
Joshi estimated the capacity requiring such upgrades at around 25 GW but did not disclose project locations or an implementation timeline. He invited industry suggestions to help shape the strategy.
India has around 59 GW of operational wind capacity and is on track to reach its target of 100 GW by 2030, the minister said.
The country added 6.05 GW in FY26 and another 3 GW during April–September 2026. Additions in the current financial year are expected to exceed last year’s level, he added.
Joshi said wind energy would play a critical role in meeting rising peak power demand, which is expected to reach 459 GW by 2030.
IWTMA CEO Aditya Pyasi called for faster localisation of critical components as manufacturers move towards higher-rated turbines.
"As the industry transitions towards higher rated turbines, we need to accelerate indigenisation across critical components while simultaneously building the manufacturing capacity required to meet growing demand."

Achieving this would require coordination among equipment makers, component manufacturers, technology providers and the government to strengthen supply chains and expand domestic capabilities, he said.
According to the ministry, Windergy India 2026 features around 400 exhibitors from more than 20 countries, 500 delegates and dedicated country pavilions from Denmark, Germany and Spain.
