New Delhi: Engineers India Limited (EIL), a premier engineering consultancy and project management firm, has achieved a significant milestone in India’s energy infrastructure development by successfully delivering project management services for the 132-km Durgapur–Kolkata section of the Durgapur–Haldia Natural Gas Pipeline. The project forms a critical part of the ambitious Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga (PMUG) initiative.
The newly commissioned pipeline section was inaugurated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 18, in Durgapur, West Bengal
. This development marks a major step towards enhancing clean and sustainable energy access to industries and households across the state.
With this addition, the Urja Ganga pipeline network—comprising the Dobhi–Durgapur, Durgapur–Haldia, and Dhamra–Haldia pipelines—now spans over 1,030 km. The network includes pipelines of varying diameters (30, 24, 18, and 12), designed to strengthen the natural gas supply infrastructure across Eastern India.
As the Project Management Consultant (PMC), EIL played a central role in the successful and timely execution of the project, which involved navigating complex engineering and logistical challenges. The project faced significant hurdles in Right of Use (RoU) acquisition and involved around 130 critical crossings implemented using the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) technique. Notably, the Roopnarayan River was crossed using the Intersect Method of HDD for a stretch of approximately 2.8 km—an engineering feat that underscores the technical expertise of EIL.
This achievement reinforces EIL’s strong track record in executing pipeline projects across diverse and difficult terrains. It also highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting India’s clean energy transition and infrastructure development goals under the government’s flagship PMUG project.
The successful completion of this key segment is expected to accelerate the rollout of natural gas infrastructure in Eastern India, reduce dependency on conventional fuels, and contribute to environmental sustainability.
