New Delhi: The Centre on Friday appointed former Intelligence Bureau (IB) Special Director Anurag Kumar as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police, replacing Satish Golcha in a significant leadership change at one of the country's most strategically important police forces.

A 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the AGMUT cadre, Kumar assumes charge with nearly 32 years of experience spanning policing, intelligence gathering and national security. His appointment comes a day after the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved his repatriation from the Intelligence Bureau to his parent AGMUT cadre.

"With the approval of the Competent Authority, Anurag Kumar, IPS (AGMUT:1994) is hereby appointed as Commissioner of Police, Delhi with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders," the Ministry of Home Affairs said in an official order.

Kumar succeeds Satish Golcha, a 1992-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, who had taken over as Delhi Police Commissioner in August 2025. Although Golcha's tenure was scheduled to continue until April 2027, he has now been directed to report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.

Before his appointment, Kumar served as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau, India's premier internal intelligence agency, where he handled key assignments related to national security, counter-terrorism, intelligence analysis and other sensitive security operations.

An engineering graduate, Kumar has been recognised for distinguished service during his career. He received the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and was later awarded the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016.

As Delhi Police Commissioner, Kumar will oversee policing in the national capital at a time when the force faces an increasingly complex security landscape. His immediate priorities are expected to include maintaining law and order, combating organised and cybercrime, strengthening women's safety, enhancing counter-terrorism preparedness and ensuring security for VIPs and critical installations.

The Delhi Police is entrusted with securing some of the country's most sensitive institutions, including Parliament, Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Prime Minister's Office, the Supreme Court, foreign diplomatic missions and several key government establishments, making the commissioner's role one of the most critical in India's policing system.
