New Delhi: Dr Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Heavy Industries, participated in a high-level roundtable discussion organised by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers in collaboration with Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d'Automobiles, underscoring India’s growing engagement in shaping the future of sustainable mobility.

The roundtable focused on strengthening collaboration between global standards and domestic innovation as the automotive sector transitions towards cleaner and future-ready technologies. OICA, the apex global body representing the automotive industry, plays a key role in harmonising international technical and safety regulations in partnership with the United Nations, advancing climate action goals, and providing critical global industry data.
A key highlight of the engagement was the appointment of Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, as President of OICA—the first Indian to lead the global organisation.
Qureshi described the development as a proud moment for India, noting that Chandra’s leadership at both SIAM and OICA would serve as a vital bridge between India’s rapidly evolving electric vehicle and bio-fuel ecosystem and the global regulatory framework.

The roundtable witnessed participation from stakeholders across India, Germany, France and Japan, facilitating a wide-ranging exchange of ideas on pathways to achieve net-zero emissions in the automotive sector. Discussions emphasised that the transition to a “cleaner powertrain” would require a collaborative, multi-technology approach rather than reliance on a single solution.
The deliberations highlighted the importance of aligning global standards with India’s manufacturing capabilities, positioning the country not only as a major automotive market but also as a potential global leader in sustainable mobility.
