Indian Railways collaborates with USAID/India to achieve net zero carbon emission by 2030

Indian Railways and United States Agency for International Development/India (USAID/India) signed an MoU on June 14, focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency collaboration

New Delhi: Indian Railways, in its proactive pursuit of sustainability, has taken a momentous step towards achieving Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2030, said the Railways Ministry in a statement. In a significant development, Indian Railways and the United States Agency for International Development/India (USAID/India) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 14, focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency collaboration, the statement added.

Indian Railways & USAID to combat climate change & reduce carbon footprints

The MoU was officially signed by Naveen Gulati, Member (Traction and Rolling Stock), Railway Board, Indian Railways, and Isabel Coleman, Deputy Administrator, USAID, in the presence of Anil Kumar Lahoti, Chairman and CEO, Railway Board. This landmark agreement demonstrates the shared commitment of Indian Railways and USAID to combat climate change and reduce carbon footprints, said the statement.

USAID will provide technical assistance & support to Indian Railways

USAID, as an agency of the US government plays a vital role in supporting international development and fostering sustainable practices worldwide. Through this collaboration, USAID will provide technical assistance and support to Indian Railways in various areas related to clean energy and energy efficiency.

Scope of MoU

The scope of the MoU encompasses multiple key areas, including long-term energy planning for Indian Railways with a focus on clean energy solutions. It also involves the development of an Energy Efficiency Policy and Action Plan for IR Buildings, enabling a more sustainable infrastructure. Additionally, the partnership aims to plan for clean energy procurement, aligned with Indian Railways' vision of achieving net-zero emissions.

Regulatory & implementation barriers

Addressing regulatory and implementation barriers will be another critical aspect of the collaboration, with technical support provided by USAID. The partnership will also offer bid design and bid management support for large-scale renewable procurement, ensuring system-friendly integration. Furthermore, the promotion of e-mobility will be a priority, with USAID extending its support to Indian Railways in this area.
