NMDC signs MoU with IIT Kanpur to boost cybersecurity, AI and digital innovation

NMDC has signed an MoU with IIT Kanpur to collaborate on cybersecurity and advanced digital technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)

New Delhi: In a significant move to accelerate digital transformation and strengthen cyber defences, NMDC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur to collaborate on cybersecurity and advanced digital technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).

The agreement has been signed by Satyendra Rai, Executive Director (Digital Transformation), on behalf of NMDC, and Prof. Ashoke De, Dean (R&D), IIT Kanpur, in the presence of Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur, senior officials from NMDC and representatives of IIT Kanpur.

Under the partnership, NMDC and IIT Kanpur will work together on a wide range of initiatives such as cybersecurity risk assessments, policy and governance support, security operations, incident response, and strategic integration of AI and ML. The collaboration will also focus on capacity building, knowledge sharing, research and innovation to enhance NMDC’s digital resilience.

The scope of the agreement includes joint training programmes, pilot projects, research activities and development of proof-of-concept solutions aimed at modernising NMDC’s digital framework and strengthening cybersecurity protocols across its operations.

Commenting on the collaboration, Amitava Mukherjee, CMD, NMDC, said, “This MoU brings IIT Kanpur’s advanced research capabilities into NMDC’s extensive operational ecosystem. This collaboration will help us strengthen our digital defences, improve operational intelligence, and build a secure and future-ready technological foundation for NMDC.”

The partnership underscores NMDC’s commitment to transforming into a digitally strong and future-ready mining organisation while fostering industry–academia cooperation for innovation in India’s mineral sector.
