New Delhi: State-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) said on Friday that it has made significant progress towards subduing and capping the Mori-5 well, with its Crisis Management Team clearing a majority of the debris from the site and securing access to the wellhead area.

In a statement, ONGC said key structural obstructions, including parts of the mast and associated equipment, have been removed, allowing operations to move closer to the capping stage in line with the approved blowout control plan.

Equipment mobilised, water blanket maintained

ONGC said all essential equipment and materials required to expedite the operation have been mobilised to the site. A continuous water blanket is being maintained around the wellhead to enable safe execution of ongoing activities.

The Mori-5 well is operated by PEC contractor Deep Industries, the statement said.

Residents resume routines as situation stabilises

“With conditions stabilised, residents in the surrounding areas have resumed their normal routines,” ONGC said, adding that operations are being carried out strictly in accordance with prescribed standard operating procedures.

The company said its Crisis Management Team remains in close coordination with the local administration, with community safety and environmental protection continuing to be its highest priorities.

As reported earlier, ONGC had taken operational control of the Mori-5 well on January 6 after a gas leak triggered a fire on January 5.
