SAIL’s August steel output rises 8 percent, sales grow faster at 13 percent

The state-run steelmaker also cuts borrowings by Rs 870 crore from the level recorded at the end of FY26

New Delhi: Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) recorded an 8 percent year-on-year increase in crude steel production during August 2026, while sales grew at a faster pace, indicating stronger product dispatches during the month.

The state-owned steelmaker produced 1.68 million tonnes (MT) of crude steel in August, compared with 1.55 MT in the corresponding month of the previous year, according to a company statement issued on Friday. This translates into an incremental production of around 0.13 MT.

Total sales rose 13 percent to 1.87 MT during the month from 1.65 MT in August 2025. In volume terms, sales increased by approximately 0.22 MT year-on-year.

The higher rate of sales growth compared with production suggests that SAIL’s dispatches during August were supported partly by the liquidation of available inventories. However, the company did not disclose product-wise sales, realisations, capacity utilisation or export volumes for the month.

Alongside the operational performance, SAIL said it had reduced its borrowings by Rs 870 crore from the level recorded on March 31, 2026. The company, however, did not provide its latest total debt figure or specify whether the reduction was driven by repayments, stronger operating cash flows or other financial adjustments.

Debt management remains important for steelmakers because the industry requires substantial spending on raw materials, plant maintenance, modernisation and capacity expansion. Movements in domestic steel prices, input costs and demand from infrastructure, construction, automobile and engineering industries also directly influence cash generation.

SAIL, which operates under the administrative control of the Ministry of Steel, is one of India’s largest steel producers. The company has an annual production capacity exceeding 20 MT and operates integrated steel plants at Bhilai, Bokaro, Rourkela, Durgapur and Burnpur, besides specialised steel facilities and mines.

The August numbers provide an early indication of improved production and sales momentum. A clearer assessment of the company’s performance, however, will depend on cumulative volumes, steel realisations, margins and debt levels disclosed in its subsequent financial results.
