New Delhi: The number of confirmed Coronavirus cases in India shot up to 283 on Saturday with 60 people testing positive — the highest number of confirmed cases registered in a day so far. The news comes on a day when a 57-year-old man with no foreign travel history tested positive for Coronavirus in West Bengal, making this the fourth confirmed case in the state. With rise in Coronavirus cases, states have stepped up measures to contain the pandemic and have announced partial shutdowns and imposed restrictions on people's movement and gatherings as part of precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, Janata curfew on March 22 to curb Coronavirus spread

The country is set to observe a self-imposed curfew, dubbed Janata curfew, from 7 am to 9 pm on Sunday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi pitched for social distancing, asking people not to get out of their homes. Only people involved in providing essential services to the public are expected to be out on March 22.

UP Health Minister escapes Corona onslaught

In other news, Uttar Pradesh Health Minister Jai Pratap Singh, who had attended a party with Bollywood singer Kanika Kapoor days before she tested positive for Coronavirus, has tested negative for the infection on Saturday. The 66-year-old minister had gone into self-isolation after undergoing the testing on March 20. Samples of 28 people who came in contact with him have also tested negative, King George Medical University spokesperson Dr Sudhir Singh said.
