New Delhi: The highlight of the first session of the newly-constituted 17th Lok Sabha was that Union Minister Smriti Irani received the longest applause from the House as took oath as a Member of Parliament on Monday. Irani had wrested Congress' long-held bastion, Amethi, from Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 General Elections.

Oath-taking

As soon as Irani was called for oath taking, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, other Union ministers and MPs, were seen thumping the desk for a long time.

Smriti greeted pro-tem Speaker and Sonia Gandhi

After taking the oath in Hindi, Irani greeted pro-tem Speaker Virendra Kumar and Opposition leaders, including United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who reciprocated the greetings with a namaste.

Rahul was not present in the House at the time.

The backdrop

Irani had defeated Rahul by a margin of over 55,000 votes in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi constituency, which was considered to be a stronghold of the Gandhi family for long.
