Shanghai: China on Saturday announced that China's largest city by population, Shanghai, is the first city in the world to get 5G telecom facilities and broadband gigabit network both. If this is true then China has left the US and other countries behind in the race to develop next-gen mobile telecommunications facilities. This development has been ably backed by China mobile, Chinese state-owned enterprise. Writing this news in India one thinks about the plight of consumers using BSNL and MTNL mobile service.

5G is the 5th generation cellular mobile technology the 4G (LTE-A, WiMax), 3G (UMTS, LTE) and 2G (GSM) systems with a download speed that is 10 to 100 times faster than 4G LTE networks. China government's mouthpiece 'China Daily' has reported that along with 5G Shanghai has developed a broadband gigabit network. Gigabit internet is the next generation of broadband internet service which is typically delivered over fibre-optic lines and provides speeds of 1,000Mbps, which is also referred to as "1 Gbps" or "Gigabit" internet.

Huawei the gamechanger for China

Trial runs of the 5G network, backed by state-run telecom carrier China Mobile, officially started the service in Shanghai's Hongkou on Saturday, where 5G base stations had been deployed over the last three months to ensure full coverage, once fully operated the consumers will be able to avail the facility after upgrading their SIM cards, the report said.
