Vinod Seshan (IAS) gets two-year extension as Joint Secretary of Petroleum Ministry

The ACC has approved a two-year extension in the central deputation tenure of Vinod Seshan (IAS) as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas

New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a two-year extension in the central deputation tenure of Vinod Seshan (IAS) as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG).

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on October 6, 2026, the extension has been approved beyond March 8, 2027, for a period of two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Seshan is a 2008-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Petroleum Ministry. The ACC approved the extension on a proposal moved by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Seshan joined the Petroleum Ministry on central deputation in March 2022. He was initially appointed as Director in the ministry under the Central Staffing Scheme and subsequently rose to the level of Joint Secretary.

Profile of Vinod Seshan

Seshan is a 2008-batch IAS officer of the Assam cadre. He has more than 20 years of professional experience, including over 17 years in policymaking, implementation, development and infrastructure project management, district administration and crisis response.

Before joining the IAS, Seshan worked in India's software services sector, with experience spanning software development, testing and knowledge management. During his administrative career, he has also served on the boards of several government companies, including Oil India Limited and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited.

Seshan holds a Bachelor's degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering and master's-level qualifications in Public Policy as well as Infrastructure, Investment and Finance from University College London. His professional interests include large infrastructure projects, their financing mechanisms and sustainability.

He is currently also associated with the governance of key petroleum-sector institutions. The Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC) lists him as Joint Secretary (E), MoPNG, and a member of its Governing Body.

In March 2026, Seshan was appointed as a Government Nominee Director on the Board of state-run oil and gas major Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) for a three-year period on a co-terminus basis or until further orders.
