New Delhi: The Government of India has appointed Johny Tom Varghese (IAS) as Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Mines. The appointment has been made under the Central Staffing Scheme for a period of four years from the date he assumes charge or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Varghese is a 2014 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Tamil Nadu cadre.
The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) issued the formal communication on August 4, 2025, directing the Tamil Nadu government to relieve the officer of his current responsibilities with immediate effect to enable him to take up his new role in the Central Government.
As per the norms laid out by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), the officer is expected to join the assigned post within three weeks of the issuance of the appointment order, failing which the process of debarment from the Central Staffing Scheme may be initiated.
Varghese has held various administrative roles in the Tamil Nadu government and is expected to bring valuable experience to the Ministry of Mines.
