New Delhi: In a major boost to India’s maritime security and self-reliance in defence manufacturing, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) launched two advanced Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), ICGS Ajit and ICGS Aparajit, at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) on Friday. The vessels are the seventh and eighth in a series of eight indigenously built FPVs being constructed by GSL for the Coast Guard.

Designed and built entirely by GSL, the vessels highlight the growing strength of India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities. Each FPV measures 52 metres in length, displaces 320 tonnes, and is equipped with Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP), the first of their kind in this class in India, providing superior manoeuvrability and propulsion efficiency.

Capable of undertaking multi-mission roles, the new FPVs will support operations such as fisheries protection, coastal patrol, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy and search and rescue, particularly around India’s island territories and Exclusive Economic Zone.

The vessels were launched by Manju Sharma, in the presence of Dr Mayank Sharma, Financial Advisor (Defence Services), who graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest. The event was also attended by Inspector General Bhisham Sharma, Commander, ICG Region (West), along with senior officials from the Indian Coast Guard and Goa Shipyard Limited.

Commending the ICG and GSL for their achievement, Dr Sharma lauded the project’s contribution to domestic industry, employment generation, and the MSME ecosystem. He highlighted that such initiatives are vital for strengthening national self-reliance in maritime capability.
