New Delhi: Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), a subsidiary of ONGC, has won the Innovation Award 2024-25 for Best Innovation in Research & Development in Refining Technology at the 28th Energy Technology Meet (ETM 2025) held in Hyderabad.
This marks MRPL’s fourth successive win at the prestigious Government of India-promoted awards, reinforcing its leadership in indigenous innovation within India’s refining sector.
The recognition was conferred for MRPL’s “Gradual Olefins and Aromatic Technology (GOAT)”, a pioneering Crude-to-Chemicals (C2C) process developed in-house by MRPL’s Innovation Centre team. The GOAT technology represents a significant step toward converting crude oil directly into high-value petrochemicals, thereby improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon intensity, and supporting India’s transition toward sustainable refining and a circular economy.
The award was presented by Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri in the presence of Pankaj Jain, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, during the ceremony organized under the aegis of the Centre for High Technology (CHT) at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC).
On behalf of MRPL, Nandakumar V. Pillai (Director-Refinery) and Chief Managers Karthick R and S Nirmal Ganesh from the Innovation Centre received the award.
The three-day event, held from October 28–30, was themed “Green Energy Horizons: Advancing Sustainable Refining & Energy Innovation.” It brought together refiners, petrochemical producers, technology licensors, equipment manufacturers, and service providers from India and abroad to exchange insights and best practices in sustainable refining and decarbonization technologies.
Commenting on the achievement, Nandakumar V Pillai said, “MRPL has always been ahead of its time in adopting advanced technologies. I am elated that our Innovation Centre is not only developing but also commercially implementing breakthrough technologies like GOAT, a futuristic and competitive Crude-to-Chemicals process that many in the industry are still striving to achieve. I wholeheartedly congratulate our team for securing this national recognition for the fourth consecutive year.”
The 28th Energy Technology Meet serves as a premier platform showcasing innovations driving India’s energy transition and reinforces MRPL’s position as a frontrunner in sustainable refining and indigenous technology development.
