New Delhi: Former Petroleum Secretary and ex-Chief Secretary of Delhi MM Kutty (IAS) has been appointed as Chairperson of the newly constituted Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region. Along with Kutty, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointments of three candidates as Member and Technical Member in the Commission. The decision to constitute the Commission comes at a time when the air quality in Delhi-NCR has been deteriorating.

According to an order from the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), apart from Kutty, Environment Ministry Joint Secretary Arvind Kumar Nautiyal has been appointed as full-time Member and  IIT-Delhi's Professor Mukesh Khare and Ex-Director General of IMD Ramesh KJ have been appointed as full-time Technical Member. They have been appointed to the post for a period of three years with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the post, or until attainment of the age of 70 years, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region

Recently, the President of India promulgated the 'Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas Ordinance – 2020' for better co-ordination, research, identification and resolution of problems surrounding the air quality index and matters connected. It is a statutory authority and has been set up for monitoring the air pollution levels in Delhi and its surrounding areas. The newly constituted Commission will supersede all existing bodies such as the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), and even the state governments of Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. It will have the powers to issue directions to states around NCR.
