NCL inks MoU with CIL, NTPC JV for installation of 50 MW solar power PV project

New Delhi: In a step towards renewable energy and becoming a net-zero energy company, Northern Coalfields Limited (NLC) has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with CCIL & NTPC Urja Pvt Limited (CNUPL) for the installation of 50 MW solar power PV project at Nigahi Area, Singrauli (MP), on Thursday in a ceremony held through video conferencing. The MoU has been signed in the presence of Coal India Limited's (CIL) Director (Technical) Binay Dayal, NTPC Limited's Director (Operations) Ramesh Babu, NCL's Director (Technical/Operations) Dr Anindya Sinha, CIL's Director (Technical/Project and Planning) SS Sinha, CNUPL's Chairman MK Singh and other officials of Coal India Limited (CIL), NTPC, CNUPL and NCL through video conferencing.

General Manager (E&M) SK Verma, on the behalf of NCL, and CNUPL's CEO BK Panda, on the behalf of CNUPL, signed the MoU.

Dayal congratulated NCL CMD PK Sinha and his team for the early completion of the project. He added that it is the largest project in the renewable field by CIL to date and it is a historical day for CIL in its journey of pivoting towards green energy.

NTPC's Ramesh Babu also congratulated the entire project team. While extending his full support as a project management consultant, he hoped that more such projects will come up in the future.

While Dr Sinha affirmed NCL's commitment to becoming a net-zero energy company and said that this step will reduce carbon emission by about 78,020 tonnes per annum, he said that this project will fulfill about one-fourth of energy requirements of NCL and assured that the project will meet its expectation.

NCL is a Miniratna company and a subsidiary of Maharana CIL. NCL produces 115 MT coal annually with its 10 highly mechanised open cast coal mines to meet the energy aspirations of the country. With an aim to meet the captive power consumption, NCL's 50 MW power plant will enable NCL to become a net-zero company. NCL has already started work on rooftop solar with a capacity of 3.37MW on its offices and residential complexes. NCL is likely to contribute about 280 MW in its share of Coal India Limited's target.

Notably, Coal India Limited & NTPC Urja Pvt Limited (CNUPL) is a joint venture of CIL & NTPC incorporated with the objective of development of coal mines and renewable energy.
