NTPC’s 20 MW capacity at Kawas solar project starts operation

• Recently, on April 5, NTPC signed an agreement with GGL for blending green hydrogen in Piped Natural Gas (PNG) network of the state government utility at the power producer's Kawas facility

New Delhi: State-owned power giant NTPC announced on Saturday the beginning of commercial operation of the first part capacity of 20 MW at its 56 MW Kawas solar project in Gujarat. "Consequent upon successful commissioning, the first part capacity of 20 MW out of 56 MW Kawas Solar PV Project at Kawas, Gujarat, is declared on Commercial Operation from 00:00 Hrs of May 14, 2022," said NTPC in a BSE filing.

NTPC's 56 MW Kawas solar project in Gujarat is a ground-mounted plus floating solar PV project. Recently, on April 5, NTPC signed an agreement with Gujarat Gas Ltd (GGL) for blending green hydrogen in Piped Natural Gas (PNG) network of the state government utility at the power producer's Kawas facility. The power PSU will produce green hydrogen by using electricity from the existing 1 MW floating solar project of NTPC Kawas.

With the commissioning of the 20 MW capacity, the standalone installed and commercial capacity of NTPC has reached 54,616.68 MW. Further, the NTPC group installed and commercial capacity has touched 68,981.68 and 68,321.68 MW, respectively.

NTPC Ltd has doubled its renewable energy (RE) target for 2032 from 32 GW to 60 GW of solar and wind power. The pivot towards green energy is part of India's largest thermal power utility's diversification plan as renewable energy tariffs decline and the government has announced its intention to not commission any new thermal power plants (TPP). Also, global capital is shifting away from conventional, fossil fuel-based sources of energy.
