Cochin Shipyard, Drydocks World ink MoU to boost India’s ship repair infrastructure

New Delhi: In a significant development aimed at strengthening India’s maritime capabilities, Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Drydocks World, a subsidiary of global logistics giant DP World. The partnership seeks to develop world-class ship repair clusters in India, synergizing the technical expertise and infrastructure strengths of both organizations.

The MoU, facilitated under the aegis of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India, was signed during the ‘CEO-Connect: Dubai-India Economic Ties & Opportunities’ event held in Mumbai. The event witnessed the presence of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, along with India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal.

Key dignitaries present at the MoU signing included Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, and Shri Madhu S Nair, Chairman & Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard Limited.

The strategic partnership aims to bring global best practices to India’s ship repair ecosystem and expand capacity through the development of clusters in Kochi (Kerala) and Vadinar (Gujarat). These clusters will serve as hubs for maintenance, repair, offshore fabrication, and marine engineering services.

In addition, the collaboration envisages active engagement with major Indian ports and other government entities to boost offshore fabrication capabilities. It aligns with national initiatives such as the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Maritime AmritKaal Vision 2047, which seek to transform India into a global maritime powerhouse.

Commenting on the development, CSL stated that the alliance will play a crucial role in modernizing the country’s maritime infrastructure, generating employment, and fostering strategic infrastructure projects, furthering the goals of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

This move is seen as a significant milestone in CSL’s journey to reinforce India’s maritime self-reliance and global competitiveness through international collaboration.
