New Delhi: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) is set to invest around Rs 15,000 crore to establish a new shipyard in Tamil Nadu in collaboration with South Korea’s HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), as part of efforts to boost India’s shipbuilding capacity.
According to an official statement, the greenfield project is expected to create nearly 10,000 jobs in its first phase, including 4,000 direct and 6,000 indirect opportunities. The facility may also house a modern ship repair unit.
CSL signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Guidance, the investment promotion agency of the Tamil Nadu government, to develop shipbuilding clusters in line with the Government of India’s vision for strengthening maritime infrastructure. A separate MoU was inked with HD KSOE for long-term strategic collaboration in shipbuilding.
The partnership aims to integrate CSL’s domestic expertise and infrastructure with HD KSOE’s advanced technology and global experience. As part of the collaboration, CSL’s 310-metre dry dock, inaugurated by the Prime Minister in January 2024, will be used to construct large vessels such as Suezmax tankers, container ships, and Capesize bulk carriers, with a planned capacity of up to six vessels annually.
To support this expansion, CSL will also establish a Block Fabrication Facility (BFF) on 80 acres in Kochi, involving an investment of about Rs 3,700 crore. The BFF will have an annual capacity of 1,20,000 MT and is expected to generate 2,000 direct jobs along with significant indirect employment in allied sectors, including logistics, MSMEs, supply chains, and ancillary industries.
