New Delhi: ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL), the wholly owned subsidiary and overseas arm of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), has announced that the Force Majeure on the Mozambique LNG Project (Area 1) has been lifted, paving the way for the resumption of construction activities that were halted since May 2021 due to security concerns in the region.

The Mozambique LNG Project, operated by Total E&P Mozambique Area 1 Limitada—a wholly owned subsidiary of TotalEnergies SE—had suspended its 13.12 MMTPA LNG plant construction in Cabo Delgado province after a deterioration in the security situation. With conditions now significantly improved, the project consortium has notified the Government of Mozambique about the end of the Force Majeure declared on May 11, 2021.

The Area 1 Mozambique LNG consortium includes TotalEnergies SE (26.5 percent), ONGC Videsh Rovuma Limited (OVRL) (10 percent), Beas Rovuma Energy Mozambique Limited (BREML) (10 percent), ENH Rovuma Area Um, S.A. (15 percent), Mitsui Rovuma Offshore Area 1 Limited (20 percent), BPRL Ventures Mozambique B.V. (10 percent), and PTTEP Mozambique Area 1 Limited (8.5 percent).

ONGC Videsh, through its subsidiaries OVRL and BREML, holds a collective 16 percent participating interest in the Area 1 concession. The lifting of Force Majeure marks a crucial step toward the project’s revival and positions it for early completion, reinforcing India’s energy security strategy through diversified global investments.
