New Delhi: In a significant boost to India’s natural gas infrastructure, GAIL (India) Limited has successfully berthed and discharged its first LNG vessel, GAIL Bhuwan, at the Dabhol LNG Terminal following the completion of its landmark breakwater project. The vessel was received on June 2, 2025, in the presence of GAIL Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) Sandeep Kumar Gupta and Director (Marketing) Sanjay Kumar.

The successful commissioning of the breakwater—after securing all requisite statutory clearances—transforms the Dabhol LNG Terminal into an all-weather port. This critical development enables uninterrupted, year-round LNG operations at the facility, overcoming seasonal disruptions during the Southwest monsoon that previously affected marine logistics along India’s western coast.

Strategically situated along the Maharashtra coastline, the Dabhol terminal boasts a current regasification capacity of 5.0 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA). It is a key node in India’s gas distribution network, connected to the Dabhol-Bangalore and Dabhol-Panvel cross-country pipelines. The terminal’s unique island breakwater—unlike conventional land-connected structures—represents an advanced feat of marine engineering, designed and implemented through collaborative efforts involving multiple stakeholders and bespoke technical solutions.

The new infrastructure is expected to significantly enhance vessel accessibility and improve the terminal’s capacity utilization, further strengthening the country's energy infrastructure and supply reliability.

This milestone also sets the stage for GAIL’s planned expansion of the Dabhol terminal’s capacity from 5.0 MMTPA to 6.3 MMTPA in the first phase over the next three years. Upon completion, the upgraded terminal is projected to handle up to 100 LNG cargoes annually, reinforcing its pivotal role in ensuring India’s energy security and supporting the nation’s transition to a gas-based economy.
