New Delhi: GAIL (India) Limited on Thursday commenced construction of its upcoming Research & Development (R&D) Centre with a ground-breaking ceremony held at Sector 22, Industrial Model Township (IMT), Sohna in Haryana.
The ceremony was led by Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) Sandeep Kumar Gupta in the presence of Director (Business Development) Rajeev Kumar Singhal and other senior officials of the company.
The upcoming R&D Centre is envisioned as a state-of-the-art, future-ready innovation hub aimed at strengthening GAIL’s technological capabilities across its core natural gas business as well as emerging clean energy domains. Spread across 30 acres, the facility will feature advanced laboratory infrastructure and pilot-scale facilities designed to bridge the gap between laboratory research and field deployment.
The centre, covering approximately 85,000 square metres, will house seven major research verticals, including natural gas pipeline integrity and asset management, natural gas applications and NG/CO₂ valorisation, petrochemicals and polymers, renewables, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and advanced analytical sciences.
In addition, the facility will be equipped with sophisticated pilot infrastructure such as closed-loop pipeline testing systems, linear pull-through rigs, and pilot reactors for polymer development and natural gas/CO₂ valorisation. These capabilities are expected to enable validation of new processes, materials, pipeline technologies, and sustainable energy solutions under industry-relevant conditions.
The R&D Centre is expected to play a key role in strengthening indigenous technology development, fostering collaboration with academia and startups, and supporting India’s broader energy transition goals.
