Govt approves Rs 334.89 crore flyover at Visakhapatnam Port

New Delhi: The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has approved a Rs 334.89-crore internal flyover at Visakhapatnam Port Authority to ease cargo movement, reduce congestion and improve operational efficiency within the port premises.

According to an official statement, proposed 3.584-km elevated corridor, connecting Convent Junction with the Dock Area, will separate road and rail traffic and address bottlenecks at nine major railway level crossings. The project was approved by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal after appraisal by the Delegated Investment Board chaired by the ministry's Secretary.

The nine level crossings currently witness around 18 gate closures every day due to high train exchange volumes. Frequent closures lead to traffic congestion, longer vehicle waiting times, higher fuel consumption and increased vehicle operating costs, affecting cargo evacuation efficiency.

The elevated corridor is expected to facilitate smoother movement of vehicles and cargo by reducing conflicts between road and rail traffic. The project will include associated civil and electrical works, utility shifting, safety installations and five years of maintenance, the statement further said.

Construction will be planned to minimise disruption to ongoing port operations, particularly in critical dock areas. The project is scheduled to be completed within 30 months of commencement.

Commenting on this, Sonowal said the project would remove a critical bottleneck at Visakhapatnam Port, enabling faster cargo movement and improving overall operational efficiency. He also emphasised the government's focus on modernising maritime infrastructure to support economic growth and build a globally competitive maritime ecosystem.
