Indian Railways approves Rs 440 crore third line project on South Eastern Railway

New Delhi: Indian Railways has approved a Rs 440 crore project to construct a 14.52-km third line between Nimpura West Outer Cabin and Midnapur on South Eastern Railway, aimed at easing congestion and boosting passenger as well as freight movement on a high-utilisation network route.

The project forms part of the railways' capacity augmentation programme for high-density corridors and is expected to improve operational flexibility while supporting the transportation requirements of industries and essential commodities.

The sanctioned third line will be built on the High Utilisation Network (HUN-2) route. While the Nimpura West Outer Cabin-Gokulpur section is currently a single line, doubling work is already underway. The additional third line is expected to significantly enhance line capacity on the strategically important corridor.

According to an official statement, the route currently handles nearly 23.80 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) of freight traffic, carrying commodities such as coal, iron ore, manganese, steel, cement, petroleum products, fertilisers, limestone, containers, rice and wheat, among others. The section is operating at 115.71 percent line capacity utilisation, highlighting the need for additional infrastructure.

Upon completion, the project is expected to facilitate an additional 3.52 MTPA of freight traffic, helping reduce operational bottlenecks, improve network reliability and strengthen connectivity for industries dependent on the corridor.

Indian Railways said the project aligns with its ongoing efforts to expand network capacity across high-density routes, enabling faster movement of passengers and freight while supporting economic growth through a more efficient railway network.
