India’s natural gas consumption soars higher than petroleum products in H1 of FY25

New Delhi: India’s natural gas consumption witnessed a higher growth in the first half (H1) of the current fiscal year (April-September) as compared to petroleum products, official data shows. India’s natural gas consumption went up by 11.9 percent year-on-year in April-September period of FY2024-25 as the figure settled at 3,6850 MMSCM, while petroleum products’ consumption grew only 3.1 percent year-on-year in H1 FY25 as the economy consumed 117.7 MMT of these products.

The total natural gas consumption for the month of September was 5,840 MMSCM which was 5 percent higher than the corresponding month of the previous year.

Growth in petroleum products led by 16.7% growth in lubes, 10.4% in petcoke

India’s consumption of petroleum products during April-September 2024 stood at 117.7 MMT as opposed to 114.2 MMT during the same period of the previous year. This growth was led by 16.7 percent growth in lubes, 10.4 percent growth in petcoke, 10.3 percent growth in ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel), 7.2 percent growth in MS (petrol), 6.0 percent in LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas), 2.2 percent in Naphtha and 0.9 percent in HSD consumption besides growth in FO/LSHS during the period. For the month of September, the consumption of petroleum products recorded a de-growth of 1.6 percent with a volume of 17.9 MMT compared to the same period of the previous year.

India’s LNG imports grow 23.1% y-o-y in H1 FY25

India imported 18,975 MMSCM of LNG in H1 of FY25 which was 23.1 percent higher on year-on-year basis. In September, India imported 2,905 MMSCM of natural gas which was 12.4 percent higher than the corresponding month of the previous year.

India’s gross production of natural gas for the month of September was 2,977 MMSCM, which was lower by 1.6 percent compared with the corresponding month of the previous year. The cumulative gross production of natural gas of 18,160 MMSCM for the current financial year between April-September 2024 was higher by 1.6 percent compared with the corresponding period of the previous year.
