MCL commissions 4,000 MT Silo at Ib Valley coal washery

New Delhi: Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) has commissioned a 4,000-metric-tonne (MT) capacity silo at the Ib Valley Coal Washery in Lakhanpur Area of Ib Valley Coalfields in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district, strengthening its mechanised coal evacuation and rail logistics infrastructure.

The new silo is part of MCL’s efforts to expand First Mile Connectivity (FMC) and modernise coal handling and transportation. The facility integrates mechanised coal-handling systems with rail-based transportation, enabling systematic storage and faster loading of washed coal into railway rakes.

The silo is expected to improve dispatch operations, rake utilisation and the overall efficiency and reliability of coal transportation to consumers, while reducing dependence on conventional coal-handling practices.

The facility was jointly inaugurated by A. K. Pandey, General Manager, Lakhanpur Area, and Ghanshyam, Area Railway Manager, Indian Railways, in the presence of senior officials and employees of MCL and Indian Railways.

With a capacity of 10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the Ib Valley Coal Washery is the largest non-coking coal beneficiation facility under Coal India. The addition of the 4,000 MT silo is expected to further enhance its capacity for handling, storage and rail dispatch of washed coal.

MCL said the technology-driven facility would support more efficient and reliable coal supplies to consumers while strengthening coordination with Indian Railways and contributing to a more integrated domestic coal logistics network.
