New Delhi: Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri has announced the successful testing of a new natural gas reservoir in the Dirok gas field owned jointly by Oil India Limited (OIL) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) in Tinsukia district of Assam. In a post on X, the minister said on Friday that a new reservoir called Sand-9 in Dirok-1 gas field in ON-94/1 block at Margarita was tested and it flowed 6 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.

“In a significant development, Dirok Field, located in ON-94/1 block at Margarita in Tinsukia district of Assam and operated by #HOEC with OIL and IOCL has achieved a milestone. A new reservoir called Sand-9 was tested in well Dirok-1 which flowed 6 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. Further production testing is ongoing, based on which, the volumes will be revised and added to the proven reserves of Dirok Field,” said Puri in the post.

Dirok gas field is located in block AAP-ON-94/1 B in the Tinsukia District of Assam. It lies in close proximity to Digboi. The field is operated by HOEC, which has a 26.882 percent stake, for joint venture (JV) partners Oil India (44.086 percent) and Indian Oil Corporation (29.032 percent). The gas field is estimated to hold 11.88 million metric barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe) in proven and probable reserves and is operated under Production Sharing Contract (PSC) regime. Production from the gas field began in 2017.

The Dirok field is currently undergoing Phase II development, which includes drilling three new development wells and laying a 35-km pipeline extending to Duliajan. This phase aims to increase gas production capacity from 35 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) to 55 mmscfd.
