NHAI launches India’s first barrier-less MLFF tolling system

New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has operationalised India’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less tolling system at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat–Bharuch section of NH-48 in Gujarat, marking a significant step towards digitisation of the country’s highway infrastructure.

The announcement was made by the Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari, who highlighted that the state-of-the-art MLFF technology enables seamless toll collection without requiring vehicles to stop. It uses advanced tools such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag to facilitate uninterrupted traffic movement.

As per NHAI, the rollout of the barrier-less tolling system is expected to significantly reduce travel time, ease congestion on highways, and enhance fuel efficiency. It will also help lower vehicular emissions and minimise human intervention in toll operations, aligning India’s highway infrastructure with global standards.

Gadkari said that the initiative will enhance ‘Ease of Living’ for citizens and promote ‘Ease of Doing Business’ by enabling faster and more efficient movement of goods and logistics across the country.

He further noted that under the leadership of Narendra Modi, the government remains committed to developing world-class, technology-driven National Highway infrastructure that is efficient, transparent and commuter-friendly.
