New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has rolled out Tamil Nadu’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system at Paranur Toll Plaza on the Tambaram–Tindivanam section of NH-179B.

The barrierless tolling system allows vehicles to pass through the tolling point without stopping and uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology along with FASTag-based Electronic Toll Collection for automated toll operations.

According to NHAI, the system is aimed at reducing human intervention in toll collection, cutting congestion and travel time, improving fuel efficiency and lowering vehicular emissions on National Highways.

The initiative is part of NHAI’s phased rollout of MLFF-based tolling systems across the country to provide faster and seamless travel and improve the efficiency and transparency of toll operations.

NHAI has already implemented MLFF systems at several locations, including Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat–Bharuch section of NH-48 in Gujarat, Mundka-Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on Urban Extension Road-II in Delhi-NCR, Shahjahanpur, Daulatpura and Manoharpura toll plazas on the Delhi–Jaipur section of NH-48 in Rajasthan, and Gharaunda Toll Plaza on the Panipat–Jalandhar section of NH-44 in Haryana.

For seamless MLFF tolling, highway users are required to have a functional FASTag with sufficient balance to avoid receiving an electronic notice (E-Notice).

NHAI said the adoption of MLFF is also helping strengthen the tolling ecosystem by reducing the need for physical toll-plaza infrastructure, lowering operational costs and improving overall efficiency in toll collection.
