NTPC, NREL ink pacts with Gujarat Govt to collaborate in conventional & RE sectors

New Delhi: NTPC Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Gujarat on Thursday to collaborate in the development of both conventional and renewable energy projects across the state. Along with NTPC, its green subsidiary, NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), also signed an MoU with the government of Gujarat for the development of solar parks and projects with a cumulative capacity of 10 GW and wind projects of 5 GW in the state.

The MoUs were exchanged at the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference in Mehsana in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, Gujarat’s Minister for Finance, Energy and Petrochemicals Kanubhai Desai, and NTPC’s Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh.

The agreements pave the way for NTPC and the Gujarat government to jointly explore opportunities in the energy sector, spanning conventional generation such as thermal and hydro, as well as non-conventional segments like solar, wind, green hydrogen, battery storage, pumped hydro and waste-to-energy. The collaboration seeks to leverage NTPC’s technical expertise and financial strength along with Gujarat’s robust policy ecosystem and industrial base to fast-track clean energy deployment in the state.

NTPC targets 60 GW renewables by 2032

NTPC currently has an installed capacity exceeding 83 GW and another 30.90 GW under construction, including 13.3 GW of renewable energy assets. The company has set a target of achieving 60 GW of renewable capacity by 2032 as part of its broader commitment to India’s net-zero and sustainability goals.

In recent years, NTPC has diversified its business portfolio beyond conventional power generation to include electric mobility, battery energy storage, green hydrogen, pumped hydro storage, waste-to-energy, and even nuclear power. The company’s growing involvement in renewable and emerging technologies reflects its strategic pivot toward clean energy transition.

Strengthening centre-state energy partnership

The MoU with Gujarat marks another step in strengthening coordination between central public sector undertakings and state governments in the energy domain. It is expected to help accelerate project implementation, ensure better regulatory alignment and attract private investment into large-scale clean energy infrastructure.

Gujarat, already one of India’s leading states in renewable energy capacity, stands to benefit from NTPC’s national-scale experience and technical capabilities, while NTPC gains a strong regional foothold for its next phase of growth. The two parties are expected to set up working groups to identify specific project sites, undertake feasibility studies, and develop a roadmap for execution.
