New Delhi: Speaking on the occasion of the completion of 50 years of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’s (ONGC) prolific Mumbai High fields, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said that ONGC has to not only celebrate its past laurels, but also re-work its existing fields. “There are concrete plans to rejuvenate these mature fields in the coming time which is going to be the best time for the energy sector in India,” he said.

“Fifty years ago, Mumbai High ignited a beacon of hope, not just flames of fire. Its legacy now gleams with over 4 billion barrels of oil and 221 BCM of gas, fueling our nation’s energy sector with five lakh crore in revenue. A resilient cornerstone, currently yielding over 6.91 lakh barrels of liquid, 1.35 lakh barrels of oil daily, alongside 10 MMSCMD of gas, and infusing 99.4 lakh barrels of water per day,” said the minister. The successful completion of Mumbai High’s 50 years marks an extraordinary and glorious journey, he added.

Puri emphasised Mumbai High’s pivotal role as a beacon for future exploration, urging ONGC to embrace cutting-edge technologies like AI and Data Analytics for sustainability and reduced environmental impact. He expressed satisfaction with ONGC’s efforts in bringing new discoveries into production, signalling a strategic path for further advancements to bolster the nation’s growth.

“Recent strides in rescue mechanisms highlight our commitment to safeguarding workers. Leveraging AI and data analytics ensures sustainability and adds to Mumbai High’s impressive production record: over 4 billion barrels of oil and 221 BCM of gas,” he said.

Puri urges ONGC to lead exploration in sedimentary basin

Encouraging ONGC to lead exploration in the sedimentary basin, Puri stressed the importance of blending experience with fresh perspectives to enhance production and rejuvenate plans. He commended the new ISPHEM facility in Goa, acknowledged as a world-class establishment ensuring safety in the E&P industry, with recognition from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

ONGC commemorated the occasion by honoring past leaders and young achievers contributing to Mumbai High’s development. Additionally, a short film titled ‘ONGC Promise’ depicted the company’s journey, past, present, and future, through the perspective of a veteran ONGCian portrayed by actor Paresh Rawal.

In his welcome address, the Chairman assured intensified production plans and significant investments for exploration, expressing hope for discovering a new field akin to Mumbai High soon. The Chairman reiterated ONGC's commitment to exhaustively explore every opportunity within Mumbai High until every last drop of oil is recovered, underscoring the company's dedication to maximising resource utilisation.
