PM launches major Power Grid clean energy transmission projects in Andhra Pradesh

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday dedicated two Power Grid transmission projects worth about Rs 4,370 crore and laid the foundation stone for another transmission project worth around Rs 5,550 crore in Andhra Pradesh, strengthening the country's renewable energy evacuation infrastructure.

The projects, implemented by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL), will facilitate the evacuation of renewable energy generated in the Kurnool and Ananthapuram renewable energy zones and enable its seamless transmission through the national grid.

The projects inaugurated by the Prime Minister include the transmission system for the Kurnool Wind Energy Zone/Solar Energy Zone (Part A and Part B), built at an investment of about Rs 3,547 crore, and the transmission system for the 2,500 MW solar energy zone in Ananthapuram and the 1,000 MW solar energy zone in Kurnool, developed at a cost of around Rs 823 crore.

Modi also laid the foundation stone for the transmission system for the integration of the 4.5 GW Kurnool-IV Renewable Energy Zone (Phase-I). The project, estimated to cost about Rs 5,550 crore, will strengthen the transmission network to integrate an additional 4.5 GW of renewable energy into the national grid.

The projects are expected to boost renewable power integration and support India's goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based installed power generation capacity by 2030.

Among those present at the event were Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, Goa Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Steel Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma, and Andhra Pradesh Minister for Information Technology, Electronics & Communications, Human Resource Development and RTG Nara Lokesh.

As of June 30, 2026, Power Grid operates 291 substations, 1,86,595 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 6,34,516 MVA of transformation capacity. The company said it continues to maintain transmission system availability of more than 99.80 percent through greater automation and deployment of advanced digital technologies.
