Under the agreement, the two partners will develop the 400 kV Lessos–Loosuk transmission line and the 220 kV Kisumu–Kakamega–Musaga transmission system on a 30-year project term. The projects are aimed at strengthening Kenya’s electricity transmission network and improving power reliability in the region.

The signing ceremony was held in the presence of Power Grid Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Dr R K Tyagi, Director (Personnel) Dr Yatindra Dwivedi, and Chief Operating Officer (International Business) Sanjay Kumar Gupta.

The project assumes special significance as it represents Africa’s first Independent Transmission Project (ITP) and also marks POWERGRID’s maiden project-financed international transmission venture. The initiative underscores POWERGRID’s growing international footprint and its capability to deliver large-scale transmission projects through innovative financing and partnership models.
