Chitranjan Kumar assumes charge as Director (Technical) at ECL

New Delhi: Chitranjan Kumar has assumed charge as Director (Technical) at Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL). A mining professional with more than three decades of experience in the coal sector, Kumar has held several key leadership positions across subsidiaries of Coal India Limited and has been associated with major mining, expansion and sustainability initiatives.

A B.Tech graduate from BIT Sindri, Kumar also holds a First Class Manager's Competency Certificate and an MBA. Over the course of his career, he has led large-scale mining projects, secured statutory and environmental clearances, resolved land acquisition and rehabilitation issues, and contributed to improvements in production, productivity and sustainable mining practices.

Before joining ECL, Kumar served as Area General Manager of the Magadh-Sanghamitra Area at Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), where he played a key role in obtaining forest clearances for mining projects and advancing the 20 million tonne per year Sanghamitra Open Cast Project. His efforts also facilitated the transfer of forest land for mining operations and expedited approvals for capacity expansion.

Earlier, during his tenure at Bokaro & Kargali Area of CCL and Block-II Area of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Kumar was instrumental in resuming production at Karo Mines, commissioning BCCL's first Highwall Miner and a 5 million tonne per year washery, and resolving long-pending rehabilitation and resettlement issues. Under his leadership, Block-II Area recorded its highest coal production in a decade and posted a profit of Rs 830 crore in 2024, while Output per Man Shift (OMS) doubled within three years.

Kumar has also contributed significantly to sustainable mining and mine reclamation initiatives. At Barora Area of BCCL, he led land acquisition for the Muraidih Underground Project and eco-restoration programmes supported by TERI, while the area received the Chief Minister's Award for Environmental Compliance. At Kathara Area of CCL, he exceeded production targets and achieved the highest-ever departmental production at the Sawang-Govindpur Project, besides implementing Bottom Ash Stowing at Sawang Colliery.

His association with ECL began early in his career as Assistant Manager at Rajmahal Area, where he played an important role in operationalising the Truck Dispatch System (TDS), contributing to improved operational efficiency.

Kumar has received several honours during his career, including the Coal Minister's Award for 2021-22 and 2022-23, the Best General Manager Award (2018-19), the National Safety Award (2008 and 2009), and the H.B. Ghosh Memorial National Safety Award by the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI). He has also undergone advanced training in mining safety and risk assessment at SIMTARS, Brisbane, Australia, and participated in the Advanced Global Techno-Management Programme 2025 conducted by ASCI Hyderabad in collaboration with ESCP Business School, France.

Welcoming Kumar to the organisation, ECL Chairman and Managing Director Satish Jha said his appointment is expected to strengthen the company's focus on technological advancement, operational excellence, sustainable mining and safe coal production. He added that Kumar's extensive and diverse experience would support ECL's future growth and operational objectives.
