Kumar Shanker appointed as new Managing Director of IGL

New Delhi: Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) on Friday announced a change in its top leadership, with Kumar Shanker taking charge as Managing Director effective from June 5, succeeding Kamal Kishore Chatiwal. The appointment follows his nomination by promoter company GAIL (India) Limited.

IGL is a joint venture jointly promoted by GAIL (India) Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).

A chemical engineering graduate from BITS Pilani, Kumar Shanker brings more than 31 years of experience in the natural gas sector. His career has spanned gas processing plant commissioning and operations, petrochemical project management, corporate strategy, marketing, regulatory affairs, and city gas distribution (CGD).

Shanker is widely recognised for his expertise in regulatory matters, including authorization frameworks, pipeline tariffs, open access mechanisms, and affiliate code-of-conduct policies. Over the past two decades, he has played an active role in shaping policy and regulatory developments in India’s natural gas industry. He has also contributed to key policy discussions through presentations made to the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, NITI Aayog, and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board.

Among his notable achievements is his contribution to the implementation of the Unified Tariff framework for India’s National Gas Grid System, regarded as a significant reform for the country's natural gas sector. He was also instrumental in launching GAIL’s online Pipeline Open Access Portal, a real-time single-window platform designed to simplify capacity booking across the company’s gas pipeline network.

Prior to joining IGL, Kumar Shanker served as Managing Director of Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited. During his career with GAIL, he worked across multiple business functions and locations, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and New Delhi. He also served as co-chair of a sub-committee on the Low Emissions Gas Task Force under the US-India Strategic Clean Energy Partnership.

According to a regulatory filing submitted to the stock exchanges, Kamal Kishore Chatiwal has ceased to be the Managing Director and Director of IGL with effect from June 5, and has been repatriated to GAIL.
