New Delhi: Anup Chandra Pandey (IAS, Retd.) has been appointed as the new Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India. According to a gazette notification issued on June 8, Pandey has been appointed by President Ram Nath Kovind as the Election Commissioner with effect from the date he assumes office. Pandey (Retd.) is a 1984-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer belonging to the Uttar Pradesh cadre and retired as the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh in August 2019.

Pandey has been appointed to the position left vacant by former Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora's retirement on April 12. This restores the three-member commission to its full strength, which will now oversee the next set of crucial assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand next year.
