New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has given the additional charge of the Director-General of CRPF to ITBP's Director-General SS Deswal on Tuesday. He was given the additional charge of DG, CRPF upon the retirement of RR Bhatnagar (IPS) on December 31. Bhatnagar will hold the position till the appointment and joining of the successor or until the further order whichever is earlier, said an order from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Education & background

Deswal is a 1984-batch Indian Police Service officer (IPS) officer of Haryana cadre. He is a Science graduate (B Sc) from Panipat and also holds a Bachelor's degree in Law (LLB) from Kurukshetra University, Haryana.

As Superintendent of Police, Deswal has served in several important districts of Haryana such as Karnal, Rohtak, Kaithal, Bhiwani and Fatehabad and Commandant 5th Bn of Haryana Armed Police, Madhuban. He joined the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the year 1994 and served as Superintendent of Police till 1998 in All India Anti-Corruption Unit. He was promoted as DIG, Railways. As Inspector-General of Police, he held the charge of important ranges like Ambala and Rohtak. He worked as Commissioner of Police of Gurugram from 2009 to 2011.

He has also worked as Director-General of state Crime Branch and Haryana Armed Police. He joined Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in December 2015 and served as Additional Director General (ADG) till October 2017. He served as ADG and Special DG (Operations) in Border Security Force (BSF) for a year. He was appointed DG SSB on September 30, 2018, and was appointed DG ITBP on October 31, 2018.
