New Delhi: Western Coalfields Limited's (WCL) Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) Manoj Kumar has been entrusted with the additional charge of CMD of Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL). According to an order issued by the Ministry of Coal, the appointment of Kumar as CMD of CMPDIL will be effective for a period of six months from May 1 or till the appointment of a regular incumbent to the post, or till the further orders, whichever is earlier. Kumar had assumed the charge of CMD of WCL on January 1, 2021. Prior to this, he was serving as Director (Technical Operations) of WCL.
Profile of Manoj Kumar
Kumar is a mining engineer with distinction from the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad, 1985 batch. He obtained first-class mine manager’s certificate of competency in the year 1989. He also obtained an M Tech degree in rock excavation engineering from ISM, Dhanbad, in 1993-94 and is a recipient of gold medal. He started his career in the mining industry from WCL/SECL. He has been serving the coal industry for more than three decades. During that period, he has served in WCL, SECL and ECL in various capacities. He is known for his expertise in difficult underground mining methods and continuous miner technology. With his vast practical experience of underground and opencast coal mining, enriched with the experience of planning and contract management, he has been instrumental in the growth and sustainability of production at the places he has worked.
Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI)
The Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI) is a fully owned subsidiary of Coal India Limited, engaged in the field of environmental engineering and provides consultancy and engineering services across the globe. The Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited was established in 1974, under Coal Mines Authority Limited (CMAL) (former name of Coal India Limited), out of the planning division of now-defunct National Coal Development Corporation (NCDC) as a single-window set up to consolidate all aspects of Indian mining industry under one roof. Subsequent to the nationalisation of coal mining in India, CMPDI was reconstituted as a public sector undertaking in 1975.
