New Delhi: Bhuwan Chandra Tripathi's term as chairman at gas utility GAIL is likely to be extended after his second spell ends in July, sources say. Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has suggested extending the term of Tripathi, who has held the post since 2009, till his retirement –which is due on January 2020, sources say. The proposal will move to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) for approval.

Prior to his current post, Tripathi was the director of Marketing for nearly two years.

The state-run firm, India's biggest gas marketing and trading company, owns most of the country's pipelines. GAIL has also taken up key initiatives of the Modi government. They recently invested Rs 5,000 crore for the construction of pipelines in West Bengal to supply gas and CNG. GAIL also persuaded the government to fund 40% of the pipeline project cost. The 3400-km gas pipeline would bring cleaner fuel to large parts of eastern India with a hope to revive three fertilizer units along the way.
