M Ajit Kumar (IRS) appointed as Chairman of CBIC

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of M Ajit Kumar as Chairman of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC)

New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), has approved the appointment of M Ajit Kumar IRS (C&CE:84) as Chairman of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), under the Ministry of Finance, on Wednesday.

M Ajit Kumar is an Indian Revenue Services (Customs & Central Excise) officer of 1984-batch. He is currently serving as Principal Chief Commissioner of GST and Central Excise. The ACC has approved his appointment two days before the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will announce the Union Budget 2020, on February 1.

The new CBIC chairman M Ajit Kumar is an Indian Revenue Services (Customs & Central Excise) officer of 1984-batch. He is currently serving as Principal Chief Commissioner of GST and Central Excise

Education Qualification

M Ajit Kumar has completed M Sc in Law and Finance from the University of Oxford. He also completed MA, LLB from Delhi University and a Programme on Corporate Taxation and Advocacy from the Duke University.

Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC)

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) is the nodal national agency responsible for administering Customs, GST, Central Excise, Service Tax & Narcotics in India. It falls under the Ministry of Finance. The Customs & Central Excise/CGST department was established in the year 1855 by the then British Governor-General of India, to administer customs laws in India and collection of import duties/land revenue. It is one of the oldest government departments of India.
