UDAN gives wings to flights on 8 new routes

With operations spreading to these eight new routes, the total number of routes covered by the Regional Connectivity Scheme now stands at 194

New Delhi: Giving a further fillip to the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) in the country, eight more routes have become functional the Ministry of Civil Aviation's flagship programme, Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN), an official statement said.

Six states and six cities

The new routes are spread across a total of six states, including Karnataka, Telangana, Goa, Kerala and also West Bengal and Shillong covered under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. The cities that will be covered by these routes include Mysore, Hyderabad, Goa, Cochin, Kolkata and Shillong.

Which airlines will be operating flights on these routes?

Alliance Air, a subsidiary of national carrier Air India, will operate flights on a total of six routes out of eight — Mysore-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Mysore, Mysore-Goa, Goa-Mysore, Mysore-Cochin, and Cochin-Mysore. Flights on the other two routes — Kolkata-Shillong and Shillong-Kolkata — will be operated by budget carrier IndiGo.

While Air Alliance flights have already started operations from July 19, IndiGo has commenced services from July 20.

The backdrop

The news comes just days after the ministry declared that a total of 186 routes were operational under UDAN scheme. With operations spreading to these eight new routes, the total now stands at 194.

UDAN is a regional airport development and connectivity scheme of the government, launched with the objective of making air travel affordable or the common man and connect tier II and III cities.
