BHEL gets its first female Director as Renuka Gera takes charge as Director (Industrial Systems & Products)

Renuka Gera, who was serving as ED, has assumed charge as Director (Industrial Systems & Products) at BHEL and is the first woman to be appointed to the Board of Directors at the PSU

New Delhi: Renuka Gera has broken the glass ceiling at Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) as she assumed charge as Director (Industrial Systems & Products) at the Maharatna PSU on Tuesday. She is the first woman employee of BHEL to reach the level of Director. Prior to this, she was heading BHEL's Industry Sector business segment as Executive Director. Gera has been appointed to the post with effect from November 1, till the date of her superannuation i.e. August 31, 2023, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Earlier, PSU Watch had reported that Gera was recommended for the post of Director (Industrial Systems & Products) at BHEL by a PESB panel on July 16. She was selected from a list of eight candidates who were interviewed by the selection panel. 

Renuka Gera's profile

Gera is an electronics and communication engineering graduate from Delhi College of Engineering. She started her career with BHEL as an Engineer Trainee in the company's transmission business group in 1984. She has over 36 years of holistic and hands-on experience in various verticals of the Industry Sector segment, driving business development and diversification initiatives in energy storage systems, electric mobility, railway electrification, transportation, defence, transmission systems, including high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC), renewable energy and water management systems.

Gera has across-the-board experience in a cross-section of areas, having headed marketing, business development, engineering, contract & project management, HR, administration, planning, finance and legal, besides serving in BHEL's Bhopal manufacturing unit for five years. During her career span, she has had extensive involvement in HVDC projects in the country and has served as Project Manager of one of the largest HVDC multi-terminal projects in India.

Gera has earlier been sponsored by BHEL for an international certification program in business management conducted under the aegis of the Department of Public Enterprises.

As Director (Industrial Systems & Products), Gera is a business sector chief and will be responsible for marketing management of systems and products pertaining to Industry Sector, covering Captive Power, Transmission, Rail Transportation, Defence, Industrial Products and Renewable Energy segments.
