New Delhi: In a significant leap forward for India’s coal and steel sectors, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), has become the first in the Coal India ecosystem to commence coal production under the Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) framework. The revival of the long-discontinued PB Project marks a historic milestone in India's drive toward self-reliance in coking coal production.
Inaugurated on July 8, the PB Project is being developed and operated by Eagle Infra India Limited under a 25-year contract. The project is expected to produce 52 million tonnes of coal—primarily coking coal—over its lifecycle, providing a substantial boost to the country’s steel-making capabilities and infrastructure development.
The project’s commencement under the MDO model sets a national precedent and aligns with the Government of India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. CIL Chairman PM Prasad joined the inauguration virtually, highlighting the revival as a transformational step that turns legacy challenges into national opportunities. He noted that the project represents more than just coal extraction—it is a step toward community empowerment and long-term national self-reliance.
Speaking at the event, BCCL Chairman and Managing Director Samiran Dutta described the PB Project as a pioneering initiative that reflects the continuous support of the Ministry of Coal under the leadership of the Union Minister G Kishan Reddy and the Minister of State Satish Chandra Dubey. He reiterated BCCL’s commitment to achieving national objectives such as Mission Coking Coal, reducing import dependence, and promoting sustainable mining practices.
Senior officials present at the event included Murli Krishna Ramaiah, Director (HR); SK Singh, Director (Technical/Operations); and Manoj Kumar Agarwal, Director (Technical/Project & Planning) all of whom underscored the strategic importance of this development for both the company and the nation.
