New Delhi: National carrier Air India has decided to shelve its plan to take B777 aircraft from grounded Jet Airways because it found the deal commercially unviable given their huge maintenance requirement. "The engineering unit has done the work around the B777s and found no merit in taking them," an official working with Air India said.
A few weeks ago, Air India had shown interest in acquiring five wide-body Boeing 777 aircraft from Jet Airways on dry/wet lease and had also initiated talks with the airline's lead lender, the State Bank of India.
Meanwhile, SBI also seems to have worked out an alternative plan for the Boeing 777s owned by Jet. According to an internal mail, one of the B777 jets owned by the airline is scheduled for maintenance ferry to Hong Kong on May 10
Air India Chairman Ashwani Lohani is believed to have discussed the plan with SBI Chairman Rajnish Kumar.
However, the government-owned airline has now changed its decision. Meanwhile, SBI also seems to have worked out an alternative plan for the Boeing 777s owned by Jet. According to an internal mail, one of the B777 jets owned by the airline is scheduled for maintenance ferry to Hong Kong on May 10.
