New Delhi: Now, Indian Railways will get its very own AI-powered USTAAD who will identify under-gears of trains that require repairs and maintenance and send them to engineers. USTAAD, which is the acronym for Undergear Surveillance Through Artificial Intelligence Assisted Droid is an AI-powered robot and has been developed by the mechanical branch of Central Railway's Nagpur division. It is equipped with an HD camera through which it records videos of parts of a coach and sends them over to the concerned department via WiFi.

USTAAD can also zoom into a spot in case of doubt. Since it has LED flood light, it is also capable of capturing videos in low light as well as in dark mode.

Central Railway spokesperson Sunil Udasi said, "It captures video and still photographs of the under-gear parts of the coaches in real time and transmit them over WiFi. The engineers can see these videos on the big screen as well as record them. The camera of the robot can be rotated in any direction as per command given by the engineers."

USTAAD can also zoom into a spot in case of doubt. Since it has LED flood light, it is also capable of capturing videos in low light as well as in dark mode. "By use of this robot the chances of a mistake and any deficiency overlooked by human eye can be eliminated thus reducing chances of human error," Udasi said.

The technology is expected to help engineers to easily see and examine hard to reach areas in a coach, such as cramped or narrow spaces between under-gear parts. The Railways plans to deploy the USTAAD across its zones, once tested more minutely.
