Marking World Environment Day, the Maharatna central public sector enterprise said it continues to strengthen its environmental stewardship initiatives through sustainable packaging solutions, innovation and responsible resource utilisation.

According to HPCL, its lubricant business has incorporated 30-40 percent Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) material in plastic packaging across its lubricant portfolio, reducing dependence on virgin plastic and supporting the transition towards a circular economy.

In an official statement the company said that 'HP Racer Green', one of its lubricant products, is now being packaged in 100 percent PCR material, reflecting its efforts to combine product performance with environmental sustainability.

HPCL also said it is promoting sustainable packaging through the manufacture of 100 percent recyclable tin packs aimed at reducing resource consumption, packaging weight and waste generation while maintaining product performance. The initiative aligns with the Government's Mission LiFE vision of promoting environmentally conscious lifestyles.

Explaining its circular packaging model, HPCL said PCR material comprises recycled rigid plastics such as PET, HDPE and PPCP, which are collected, cleaned, processed and converted into granules before being reused in packaging manufacturing. The company added that a significant portion of plastic waste is sourced through scrap collector networks operating in the unorganised sector, thereby supporting livelihoods within the waste collection ecosystem.

HPCL noted that its packaging sustainability efforts are aligned with EPR regulations notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). Under these regulations, companies are required to collect and recycle an equivalent quantity of plastic introduced into the market and increase the use of recycled plastic in packaging materials.

The company said it achieved 100 percent recollection compliance for FY26 across applicable packaging and used oil obligations. Nearly 12,000 tonnes of plastic introduced into the market by HPCL have already been collected and channelled back into productive use.

HPCL further stated that it continues to expand the use of recycled plastic across additional product lines despite recycled plastic currently being more expensive than virgin plastic. The company said its long-term objective remains reducing environmental impact and promoting responsible resource utilisation across its value chain.
