The Ministry of Railways said a Rs 206-crore project has been approved for installing Kavach Version 4.0 on 680 route kilometres (RKm) covering the Rewari-Delhi and Shakurbasti-Bathinda sections, including feeder branch lines, of the Delhi Division under Northern Railway.

The project is part of Indian Railways' nationwide expansion of the indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system across high-density and strategically important routes.

Kavach is an indigenously developed train protection system designed to prevent Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents and train collisions. The system continuously monitors train movements, automatically applies brakes when required, enables trains to operate safely at maximum permissible speeds and supports reliable train operations even during adverse weather conditions such as dense fog.

According to the railway ministry, deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 on these routes will enhance railway safety, improve operational efficiency, increase the reliability of train operations and facilitate faster, technology-driven movement of passenger and freight trains.

In a separate decision, Indian Railways has approved a Rs 175-crore project to create additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives at the High Horse Power (HHP) Diesel Shed in Raipur under South East Central Railway (SECR).

Homing refers to assigning a locomotive to a designated maintenance shed that serves as its primary base for scheduled maintenance, safety inspections, repairs and overall upkeep.

The ministry said the project has been sanctioned to augment maintenance infrastructure in line with the rapid expansion of the electric locomotive fleet and the growing volume of freight and passenger operations across the railway network.

The additional facilities will enable Indian Railways to optimise the utilisation of existing infrastructure while creating capacity for future technological expansion at the Raipur locomotive depot.
